The Fame of Grace Darling

Transmitted 9th July 1939

 

This play took up the whole of the evening's transmission (9.05pm to 11.05pm) and starred Wendy Hillier in the title role, her first television appearance. Yvette Pienne's play, based on fact and concerning sensation-mongering in the early nineteenth century, was set in Northumberland and covered the period 1838 to 1842.

The cast also featured Mark Dignam, Marie Ault, Norman Claridge, Viola Lyel, Jack Lambert, William Hutchinson, and Michael Brennan.

Set design was by Malcolm Baker-Smith, and the Producer was Fred O'Donovan
