Alan Dower Blumlein

Blumlein led an extraordinary life in which his inventive output rate easily surpassed that of Edison, but whose early death during the darkets days of World War Two led to a shroud of secrecy which has covered his life and achievements ever since.

His 1931 patent for a Binaural Recording System was so revolutionary that most of his contemporaries regarded it as more than 20 years ahead of its time. In the mid 1930s Blumlein was instrumental in designing the 405-line electronic television system adopted by the BBC in 1937. During the Second World War Blumlein was deeply engaged in the very secret work of radar development and tragically died during an experimental testing flight for air-bourne radar in June 1942.

Visit this site to see all Blumlein's 128 patents in full, with associated diagrams, all binaural audio recordings, together with all binaural films.
